bandwidth monitoring

Munawar Zeeshan
Hi

I am using sarg for viewing individual user's network connection made
through squid, but the problem is that sarg only shows the volume of
data downloaded. It doesnt shows the data being uploaded thrugh my
server.

I also want to monitor the amount of uploaded data by individual user
through linux box by individual user.

What software should i use?? MRTG doesnt seems to serve the purpose. It
shows the total amount of uploaded and downloaded data, not the data
uploaded/downloaded by individual users

Hi Munawar,

If you want to limit bandwidth to individual users based on IP addresses, you can put a Linux HTB bandwidth shaper in front of your squid proxy or in the proxy itself.

See:
http://luxik.cdi.cz/~devik/qos/htb/manual/userg.htm

When used with IPTABLES, you can shape the bandwidth of individuals. Then you can use MRTG to generate individuals graphs.

The shaping mechanisms seems to be quite hard to grasp (I'm still learning it) but it works wonderfully if implemented properly.

However, Squid delay-pools might also solve your problem. Regarding individuals MRTG delay-pool graphs, I think that it can be done but I have never implemented it.

See the Squid FAQs on delay-pools.

Thanking you...

if you want to purely monitor, ntop is quite a easy to use (runs its
own SSL'ed webserver) and detail piece of software for the job

Squid normally do not log the amount of upload data, only download..

There is a sarg option to break down statistics per user IIRC.
